Association president testifies against "patent trolls" Jon Potter, president of the Application Developers Alliance, appeared before Congress Thursday to urge lawmakers to pass legislation that would curb abuses by so-called "patent trolls." The term "patent trolls" is slang for individuals or companies who buy patents with the sole intention of suing other businesses for alleged patent violations. Many associations are urging Congress to take action against the practice, saying it can cost individual businesses hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not millions, to contest a claim.
